2024 NBA Draft Random Thoughts

  • I understand nepotism and have seen it numerous times in my life. Unfortunately it goes on in every walk of life because of this I understand how Bronny James forced his way to the Lakers. What I struggle with is the power of an agent in today’s NBA. Bronny’s agent, Rich Paul, if it is true, was able to tell other teams not to draft Bronny because if you do he will play in Australia. This is wrong on so many levels. Teams will listen to Paul because they want to do business with him in the future and he is one of the most powerful agents in the NBA. I know things like this happen in the league often. If the agents and the players have all this power I ask you what power does a coach and a general manager have over their players. Do we even need to have a draft if agents can call the shots.
  • The Portland Trail Blazers appear to be collecting centers. Selecting Donovan Clingan in the draft gave them three, Rob Williams and Deandre Ayton the other two, who if all healthy should get major minutes. It makes me wonder if Joe Cronin, the Blazers GM, knows what he is doing. If he doesn’t trade one of the three I’ll have my answer.
  • Zach Edey going ninth in the draft was a surprise. Every scouting report I read had him going around twentieth in the draft. I liked him because I thought he was an old time big man who could score in the post. The selection of Edey is an example of teams drafting need and not the best available player.
  • The Spurs trading Rob Dillingham to Minnesota for 2030 and 2031 draft picks was an interesting move. The Spurs should be trying to amass talent around Victor Wembanyama now. Instead they trade away the eighth pick in the draft.

  • Kenny Atkinson is a good coach that can develop talent. He was a good hire by the Cavaliers. He did a great job developing talent with the Nets and was unjustly fired. I wonder what took so long for him to get another head job after the Nets fired him.
  • The Mikal Bridges trade to the Knicks was a good one for the Knicks. They just went all in on their team for next year. Right now the Knicks have seven real good players and one great one. They also have the best wing defending tandem in the league. Is that enough to beat a team with two great ones and three or four other real good ones. It will be fun to watch.
  • If I named two players, both outstanding defenders, and taking into account how salaries have risen over the last three years – the question I have is which one is overpaid. Player one averaged 10.1 points per game with 3.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists last year. This player averaged a little over 59 games a season over the last four years and is thirty years old. He made all defense first team once and all defense second team once. He will be thirty at the start of the season next year. He signed a contract in August 2021 and will make a little over ten million a year.Player two averaged 14.7 points per game with 4.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists last year. This player averaged 52 games per season over the last four years. He made second team all defense once. He will be 27 at the start of the season next year. He just signed a contract and will make $42 million a year for the next five years. Player one is Alex Caruso. Player two is OG Anunoby.
  • The Atlanta Hawks just traded Dejounte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans for Larry Nance Jr, Dyson Daniels and two first round picks. This mans the Hawks are beginning to retool around Trae Young. They have Zaccharie Risacher, the first pick in this year’s draft, and Jalen Johnson. I wouldn’t call this a tanking but more of a restructuring. The Hawks are now becoming Quin Snyder’s team. As for the Pelicans the addition of Murray gives them a solid team in need of a big. If they keep Brandon Ingram, who has been rumored to be on the market, they are a team to be reckoned with in the West. Put Murray around CJ McCollum, Herb Jones, Zion Williamson, Ingram and Trey Murphy and you have a good nucleus. The Pels need a big and that may be what they are looking for if they deal Ingram.
