Devin Booker is making his mark

Devin Booker is making his mark. The Phoenix Suns are now 11-6 although they began the season 4-6. They have a 7-game winning streak.

Point Book

We had not seen much of Devin Booker at the start of this season. Injuries limited his time on the court. However, there are some subtle differences in his game. The Phoenix Suns are one of the few NBA teams without a traditional starting point guard. They traded Chris Paul who was instrumental to their 2021 Championship run. Until or unless they trade for one it will be point guard by committee.

Devin Booker has taken on this challenge. He no doubt learnt a lot from Chris Paul and is nicknamed “Point Book” in this role. He has been a willing passer, drawing attention to get his team mates easier shots. The team has looked a lot different since his return.

Keeping the Streak Alive

The Phoenix Suns’ winning streak was on the line this weekend. A tough game at the New York Knicks’ home turf could have resulted in a defeat. But Devin Booker showed why he has been a 3-time All-Star so far in his career. With the game tied 113-113 he hit a clutch 3 leaving 1.7 seconds remaining on the clock that sealed the game.

Patience

A lot has happened since Devin Booker was first drafted 13th by the Phoenix Suns in 2015. They did not win more than 25 games in a season between 2015 and 2019 with a low of 19 wins in the 2018-2019 season. There were never reports of Booker requesting a trade. Other players might have. Since 2020 the Suns under the guidance of Monty Williams and Chris Paul rapidly became contenders. They are expected to be in the hunt for a title this season with Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. If this team wins an NBA Championship, Devin Booker‘s patience will have truly paid off.
