Well, we have seen this before. In fact, just last year the Los Angeles Lakers got off to a slow start to the season. They won only two of their first twelve games. Panic may have set in for some but as the season progressed, so did the team.
They went on a run after making deals right before the trade deadline and ended up in the western conference finals. That is why I am still hopeful for this year’s team. There are just a few things they need to overcome.
Lakers Struggling: Slow Starts In the First Quarter
For whatever reason, the team seems to be very lackluster in the beginning of games. There is no sense of urgency. They have been outscored 210-139 in the first quarters of the first six games.
They are getting out rebounded and giving up way too many second chance points. At times, It seems as if they are trying to save their energy for the second half. This needs to change. They need to attack straight out of the gate.
Lakers Struggling: Missing Key Guys
The health of the players is something every team deals with and the Lakers are no exception. L.A. has been without some their key guys this season and it shows. Rui Hachimura has been in concussion protocol but is rumored to be back on the court soon. He will provide another scoring option and should open up the floor once healthy.
Jarred Vanderbilt has been out all season with bursitis in his left heel. This is who they miss the most, in my opinion. He is a 6’8 power forward out of Kentucky who was once compared to Dennis Rodman by his old coach John Calipari. He brings that defensive mindset and he is an energy guy that is much needed on this Laker team.
Lakers Struggling: LeBron Needs Help
LeBron James has been great but at his age he cannot be expected to carry the load for this team night in and night out. Someone has to step up. That someone should be Anthony Davis but unfortunately, it seems as though he too may miss some time in the near future.
It comes as no surprise when it comes to Davis being hurt. He often appears on the injury reports these days. I just hope he isn’t out for too long.
The good news is that there are some good young players that will try to fill the void. Austin Reaves has provided them with a spark but needs to more consistent. Christian Wood has a lot of potential and needs a break-out season. Otherwise, this Laker team may be very active around the deadline again this season.
