NBA Recaps January 20
Some nights just feel bigger than a random Tuesday in January. Yesterday was one of those nights, with career highs, wild comebacks, and a bunch of “wait, he scored how many?” box scores sprinkled across the league.
Booker vs. Rookie Buzz in Philly
Devin Booker and the Suns walked into Philly and quietly grabbed a high-level road win, 116–110, in a back-to-back spot for both teams. Booker dropped 27 and ran the show late while Phoenix ripped off a 40-point third quarter that flipped the whole vibe of the game.
On the other side, rookie VJ Edgecombe kept Sixers fans locked in with 25 points, backed by 21 from Kelly Oubre Jr. and 20 from Tyrese Maxey. The Sixers were without Joel Embiid and Paul George, and it showed just enough in the margins, even as they made a late push that never quite felt like a real steal threat.
Clippers Crushed as Bulls Offense Explodes
In Chicago, it was one-way traffic as the Bulls hammered the Clippers 138–110 in a game that turned into a shooting clinic. Coby White led the Bulls with 27, pacing an attack that kept piling on once the lead hit double digits.
James Harden put up 24 for the Clippers, but LA never found enough stops to make his scoring matter. This felt like one of those League Pass games where you look up from your phone and the score suddenly reads like an All-Star Game.
Rockets Edge Spurs in Late-Game Nail-Biter
If you like swing plays in the final two minutes, Rockets–Spurs was your game. Houston pulled out a 111–106 win thanks to a massive two-way sequence from Reed Sheppard and some clutch buckets from Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Sengun.
Sheppard scored 21 and had the game-changing block on a Julian Champagnie three with the score tied, while Smith hit a smooth fadeaway to put Houston up for good. Sengun nearly tripled-doubled and added a key bucket late as the Rockets handed the 30–14 Spurs a rare L and inched closer in the Southwest race.
Keyonte George’s Career Night Downs Wolves
In Utah, Keyonte George turned a regular-season night into his personal highlight reel, dropping a career-high 43 in the Jazz’s 127–122 win over the Timberwolves. He went bucket-for-bucket with Anthony Edwards, who fired back with 38 in a battle that felt like a glimpse of the league’s future.
Minnesota had its moments, but every time the Wolves threatened, George answered with another deep jumper or tough finish. It was the kind of performance where you catch yourself rewinding clips just to make sure you saw the shot right the first time.
Luka’s Triple-Double Stuns Denver
The Lakers went into Denver and snatched a 115–107 comeback win behind a monster triple-double from Luka Doncic. He put up 38 points, 13 boards, and 10 assists, completely controlling the closing stretch after the Nuggets had led earlier.
Jamal Murray led Denver with 28, but the Nuggets’ late-game offense stalled just enough for the Lakers to walk them down. This felt like one of those “yep, that’s why he’s an MVP candidate” nights for Luka, the kind you remember in April debates.
Quickley Cooks as Raptors Torch Warriors
Raptors–Warriors in the Bay turned into a full-on shootout, with Toronto dropping 145 on Golden State in a statement road win. Immanuel Quickley went off for 40 points, 10 assists, and 7 threes, absolutely owning the tempo and the arc.
Scottie Barnes added 26 on ultra-efficient shooting, while Buddy Hield’s 25 and six threes were one of the few bright spots for the Warriors. As someone who has absolutely missed entire runs just walking to the kitchen, this was one of those “don’t blink or you’ll miss three more threes” games.
Heat Turn Up the Offense in Sacramento
Closing the night, Miami’s offense rolled in a 130–117 win over the Kings that felt like the Heat just kept hitting the right counters. Bam Adebayo led with 25, anchoring both ends and punishing Sacramento any time they slipped in coverage.
DeMar DeRozan scored 23 for the Kings, but Sacramento’s defense never really found its footing against Miami’s balance and pace. On a night full of fireworks, this one was the steady “we’ve got this” road win every playoff team loves to steal in January.
