Star of the Game
Toronto Snaps Minnesota’s two game win streak and pull off the win 103-91. Unfortunately, back to back games can be tough on any team, and it showed tonight for the Timberwolves. With almost no support from the rest of the team, Karl-Anthony Towns put up another impressive performance with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals. It’s always a pleasure watching Towns put on a show, but this game was reminiscent of the last several years when Towns had no support around him. The All-star break can’t come soon enough for a team that needs to get some rest.
Biggest Concern
This game fell apart because the Wolves couldn’t hit a shot. Offense was flowing, defense looked pretty good, but when your team shoots 10/42 from deep (In the fourth they shot 2/16 from three) your chances of success drop significantly. Unfortunately, the cold shooting hit multiple players at the same time. Anthony Edwards had six points (0/8 from the field), D’Angelo Russel had eight points (shooting 2/11) and Malik Beasley had six points (also hitting 2/11). This is uncharacteristic for all these shooters, and disaster looms when cold shooting strikes all of them at once.
Number of the Night
3. For the second night in a row, the honor goes to Jaden McDaniels. This was the second consecutive game, McDaniels scored 18 points, and seemed to be the only player besides Karl-Anthony Tows who played well. In addition to the frequent buckets, the young forward also had seven rebounds, a steal, and a block. While it is a little concerning that he shot 1/7 from deep, it is enough to celebrate this forward finding his rhythm again. Time will tell just what McDaniels can develop into, but in the meantime we will be watching him in the Rising Stars Challenge.
Next Game
Minnesota will take on Memphis Thursday night at 7:00 CST.
