Without Their Coach
The San Antonio Spurs are currently without their coach Gregg Popovitch, affectionately known as “Coach Pop”. He suffered a mild stroke on November 2nd. He is expected to make a full recovery but there is not yet a timetable for his return.
Next Man Up
Coach Pop would probably not want the team to fuss over him. He likely would prefer the “next man up” approach he has long fostered. Mitch Johnson has proven a steady hand. The team at the time of writing is at .500 with a 6-6 record in the tougher Western Conference.
Victor’s Progress
During this period Victor Wembanyama has been continuing to recast NBA stat lines. The greatest of our game have always done this. In Victor’s case this has involved multiple games with 20+ points, 15+ rebounds, 5+ blocks and 5+ made 3-pointers including a win against the Utah Jazz. 34 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocks in a win over the Sacramento Kings. Then last night a 50-point game in a win over the Washington Wizards.
Young Talent
The San Antonio Spurs have a promising roster beyond Wembanyama. Coach Mitch has made slight adjustments giving rookie Stephon Castle a starting role who has been a standout.
Balance
There is a great balance of youth (most of the team) with experience (Chris Paul, Harrison Barnes). Mitch Johnson unexpectedly taking up coaching duties can only help him gain more experience. The results appear to be showing. Their record might be above .500 were it not for a few games that were lost but could have gone the other way with a bit of luck.
Well Wishes
Coach Pop has a lot to look forward to once he returns. All in the NBA and beyond are wishing him a full and speedy recovery.
